  • As a Canadian, I can't believe how Americans let businesses run their lives. Here in Canada, we are too smart to let that happen. Canada is awesome, and people who live here are very smart. It is just amazing. We are so good. I swear to God, we are the best--the men have the biggest dicks, and the women have the perkiest boobs. Just an incredible place all around. GO, CANADA!

  • That was delightfully immature 😂😂😂

  • I'd like to see an episode on military spending and why politicians refuse to discuss it and another on overseas bases.

  • My company was just bought by the Coke brothers. They fucked us. Terrible. Small companies will rise again when the corporate bean counters ruins us.

  • Who is that "man" saying "muh muh muh" before Cramer?

  • I’ll have to put my underwear in my pockets from now on

  • ... its the borg...

  • Should've put a 1/ 4 stick of dynamite in the cable box

  • Disney bust bought/merged with fox entertainment.

  • 5:48 john oliver said aluminium wrong. He is no longer British 😔

  • 3:25

  • "Small businesses are the backbone of our economy." Whatever. Godzilla is still approaching the generator.

  • When I’m ballin’ I splurge on Sunglasses at Solstice ❤️❤️❤️. They have a clearance rack where brands like Gucci & Prada can get pretty substantial discounts - and not just the crazy looking ones either! I also love them because they have all their sunglasses out in the open for you to try on, & they don’t hover over you when you pick them up! (Even when you’re a 21 year old brown person! Lol) And before anyone tells me I shouldn’t be spending that money on plastic & it’s frivolous & blah blah blah. I know! 🙄 Yes I do contribute to my 401k, I pay my bills on time. I could be doing more, but I could also be doing a lot worse.🤷🏻‍♀️ I like sunglasses. I get years of use out of them. I’ve never lost a pair. And life is for living & enjoying NOW! Have a great day guys! 😘

  • Huh... Methinks Republicans believe in indoctrination a little bit too much.

  • The problem, however is that often small businesses actually WANT to be bought out by larger companies. This is a common strategy of these small business owners for many reasons - sometimes they are trying to get more resources to their company, or they just want to sell so that they can retire. I can only imagine this has been popularized by the startup machine that is Silicon Valley. It's extremely common for tech companies to start up with the end goal of being bought out. That said, I can't help but think, though that this is becoming a growing trend for small businesses in all industries. Take, for example, the independent coffee shop/coffee roasting community. It is, if anything the epitome of a small business startup. You can get going by selling at farmers markets for a very low cost, eventually move to your brick-and-mortar shop, and continue expanding out from there. However, this industry is now being penetrated by venture capitalists, corporate buy-outs, and so on. Both Stumptown and Blue Bottle are the prime examples, but there are smaller examples as well. Revelator, who owns coffee shops around the Southeast, recently bought out a small local chain in Atlanta, Octane Coffee. All that said, I think John's commentary is mostly spot-on, but he needs to consider that this is being driven in no small part by the small businesses themselves. And really, who can blame them?

  • John how do you correlate the annexation of existing businesses with a decrease in the formation of new ones?

    • It's difficult to start a business while competing with a monopoly.

  • True Capitalism doesn’t exist anymore. What we have now is cancer.

  • ...and if you're so angry at what is going on and decide to live this shit hole called America, they (the owners) will make you pay the "Exit tax". Yes, they covered all the bases. You always lose.

  • Capitalism and America. Two huge lies... Citizenry will die poor after slaving entire lifetime, but, they lived in hope of one day making it big. Capitalists, their puppet politicians and the crooked clergy all want you to surrender your money to them, while they stroke you with their empty words and promises. You are simply too demented to see what is happening.

  • Corporate business is founded on endless growth. That's not sustainable. So corporations get into massive debt to their shareholders and need to make back bigger returns. So they buy smaller businesses. And then just keep buying more and more and more. Until they get into cripplingly unmanageable financial problems.

  • now that the AT&T and Time Warner merger has gone through, does that mean John is gon lose his job??

  • So why haven’t you mentioned the real monster in the room, Monsanto?

  • "consolidated industrie" dos not loose the interest to innovate but the interest to offer decent quality... or / and decent price.

  • Airlines did not add fees because of some "industry standard." Airlines added fees to increase revenue while still advertising low fares. Airlines have too much competition that is purely based on price. Air travel was incredibly fucking expensive until deregulation. Now it is dirt fucking cheap and more people are flying. Only airlines are going bankrupt every few years because they make very little money on low cost flights.

  • Corporatism (AKA cronyism): the end of capitalism if we don't fix it before we're in a Rockefellian Renaissance

  • John Oliver: the only man on earth that can make a cable box explosion feel more majestic than fireworks on new year in Dubai.

  • *WARNING IF YOU ARE HERE FOR THE FART RELATED COMMENTS GO FUCK A STUFFED ANIMAL WHILE LOOKING AT A PICTURE OF A REAL ANIMAL* Edit : wow no likes😔😭

    • +Safir 😂😂Fuck you (but you're right)

    • You only get likes if your comment is funny

  • I worked tech support for 8 months. It payed well but the company seemed more interested in work around and dodging complaints rather than helping out their customers. What company did I work for, you ask? AT&T 🙃

  • If only American's didn't hate each other; we could come together and not buy anything for a month and show these motherfuckers who really has the power. And, who uses Google any more? DuckDuckGo, Ecosia.org are at least two search engines that do the same thing as Google, but so far aren't evil (they're actually better search engines, 'cause they show you shit Google has censored).

    • Oh my god another Ecosia user! I made enough searches to plant a tree already!

  • Cable box? I haven't seen cable tv (including a commercial) in 10 years now. And it's absolutley amazing.

  • Thank you John

  • now do nation states

  • It's 2019 Amazon owns online shopping Google owns the internet experience Bayer owns pharmaceutical Lockheed Martin owns global defense Government works with the corporations to rule you through legitimate police business

    • Replace google with ecosia and plant trees while you search!

  • 11:10 holy fucking creepy

  • It's worth noting, despite the substantial increase in baggage fee revenue between 2007 and 2016, the industry's average compound growth for overall revenue was 2.03% over the same period, roughly equal to inflation during the same period: Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

  • I'd love to take away 2nd term reelections away from the legislative branch, to help curb the lobbying debacle. Unfortunately that might just make it easier for "pocket reps" to sneak in who are on the take completely.

  • Hilarious. Good stuff. Thanks dudes.

  • se-tv.com/tv/video-FO0iG_P0P6M.html

  • The bits about AT&T - I love John Oliver for those bits!!!!!!!

  • Cable box? Come on America, thats so last decade...

  • Jim Cramer is such an obnoxious Jewish stereotype. I mean, sure, he's Jewish, but he's the personification of the grating, pushy, New York dick. I'm surprised Abe Foxman hasn't filed an anti-defamation lawsuit against CNBC for letting the prick mash buttons and berate his audience. Can't cable TV find an ex-Hedge-Fund manager who has an ounce of charm? Affability? Human warmth? Nah, fuck it. We're talking ex-Hedge-Fund managers here...

  • And they are willing to sell it all to the highest bidder- the communist Chinese.

  • March 2019, the AT&T and Time Warner merger is still ongoing... Wow.

  • All I can think about is Flipper

  • Nooo! Not Grover!

  • So, if TW merges with AT&T does it rebrand as TWAT&T?

  • Small businesses are the coccyx of our economy.

  • Anyone remember Archie Bunker saying, "American Thieves And Thugs"? Sorry, couldn't resist.

  • Dropped my cable box and got TIVO boxes. I own them outright and pay less for DVR services.

  • Wow. This was when John still had his balls.! What happened John ?

  • their CGI and effects guy is an unsung hero XD

  • I as a Canadian shall say. My cable box is beautiful, slick and small. Get fucked America and thank you telus. Send me the 500 to my PayPal.

  • "You call it monopoly, I call it enterprise." - John D. Rockefeller

  • Hello capitalism.

  • If their talking point is that small business is the backbone....then why was mine taxed out of business?

  • Anti-trust needs to kick in...maybe after Trump leaves office cuz it's not going to happen under that bastard.

  • I shill my credit union AFCU, a lot but for good reason. I've heard nothing but awful stories from friends who bank with large banks and I just don't understand why people deal with that crap. Like, my credit union actually gives a shit about my business, their call center workers are super helpful and well trained, they don't occasionally sign me up for extra services to try and raise my fees, they're not found colluding in some massive scandal every few weeks, and they didn't have to "re-establish" themselves to try and earn back consumer trust. If you can get an account at a local credit union or even community bank do it.

  • Maybe we shouldn't have corporations

    • Do you always come up with idiotic ideas?

  • 95% of the comments: "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" 5% of the comments "95% of the comments: "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" 5% of the comments..."

  • Sounds like DirecTv/HBO vs. Dish Network! Go Figure!

  • I'm a sucker for fart noises ... I'm sorry...

  • The reason that investments yield more than savings accounts is because you YOU the INVESTOR are doing LABOR by figuring out who, today, deserves YOUR capital in order to buy labor, equipment, etc.. If you cannot judge stocks, you must judge the person who invests in stocks for you. It only works if you are responsible. And if you are irresponsible, you will be fucked... and what's worse the world will not have the benefit of investments being in quality businesses that have good ideas and make good products. Upon YOU the entire system rests! That is why you GET to get dividends, otherwise you MUST buy BONDS. That is not to say that these people ought not be held to account when they LIE but this does not improve by more oversight, more credentials, whatever. YOU ARE THE OVERSEER. You control your money. You must AT A MINIMUM diversify so that you have a war chest if you need to sue someone.

  • The mantra of US democracy should be revised in 21st century as “ Government of the people, by the people , for the corporation will ultimately perish this earth.

  • BING SUCKS.

  • How the fuck is Kramer still on the air? He was the guy that was selling us on sub prime mortgages in 2008!

  • i like how he ignores that trump has tried to stop this very thing

    • +Flower Doyle google trump time warner cable merger

    • please elaborate.....because we missed his efforts!

  • Its the mormons XD

  • ironically, the spinoff show with just fart noises won the emmy

  • been hacked

  • Interesting, John Oliver as any other leftist comedian constantly advocates for more government regulation, which kills small businesses and benefits giant corporations which can survive said regulations. And best of all, the answer is more regulations ... pathetic.

    • Flower Doyle my solution is to stop corruptible government regulations and let competition reign free. Natural monopolies do not exist.

    • And your solution is?

  • Fuck you AT&T!

  • "CHOICE"

  • My at&t bill is sitting at $252 a month right now

  • Big business, the same as the government (well it is the same thing) is gradually taking over control of everything and the zombie masses are allowing it

    • It would be great if we lived in a world were these bullshit rules were not needed, people were not cunts who were always trying to fuck everybody else over. The funny thing is these same people always go crazy when they are fucked over

  • Thank you, John Oliver & all the other great comedians, for keeping America informed of the real issues at hand! Also, I couldn't agree more w you about AT&T! They have awful service, they change your plan w/o notifying you & every month, the bill goes up, w no new services. Get this, they did change my account, because they don't like that I have some grandfather clause w unlimited wifi .. anyway, they changed my acct & w/in 2-3 days, they told me I owed over $15,000.00. It took them over six months of headache & they blamed it on me. I really can't stand them. Most the ppl are nice though. ✌

  • How many of the LWT stories have been resolved? Could we have a "2 year follow up" for each story? (Because I don't see facebook being broken up yet.)

  • I love how John Oliver hates AT&T I feel like only he can understand how much they suck! F*#$ you AT&T!!!

  • So Grover must be an actual entire muppet species; That, or have amazing regenerative properties exploited by corporations to produce all those chips. Thoughts?

  • Absolutely true. I live in Portland Oregon. The state & city with the highest number of microbreweries/capita in the nation. That was up until a few years ago.

  • You can shit on at&t all you want but my experience with them has been great. I was once on a hike in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico, and had at least three bars through the whole thing, and all my non at&t buddies had nothing.

  • One word: Debeers and diamonds

  • Small Businesses are the backbone of the economy? Sure, that's why Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, GM, Wall Street, and other big businesses make all the rules to favor themselves and get away with it.

  • I learned so much

  • The entire video I was thinking Ea-Bioware and Activision-Bungie *even though they split now*

  • Surprised that you didn't talk about the internet providers of America.

    • +mester Manchester I know, just thought that this would have also been a good time to reference it

    • He did, net neutral episode

  • i feel like john oliver brings up so many great points. It's impressive how he can both be funny and make great logical points

  • This is the same arse that champions the European Union. An organisation that kills small businesses with regulations at the behest of large corporations.

  • Something something Wall-E something something Buy n Large.

  • Who else has has gotten to Google by using Bing? Only to then conduct the actual search using Google. I can't be alone.

  • Okay so I’m not far into the video, but if he doesn’t mention nestle please look it up! It owns everything, and is the largest consumer of the world fresh water

  • Thanks JOHNNY OFFEL, I've just returned from pausing this video in order to (using not BING - also not sorry) to find out who makes/owns my favorite sunglass company, Pacific Coast Sunglasses. I was delighted to find that Luxotica does not. Thus, they shall continue to benefit from my patronage.

  • The corporate consolidation is the direct result of left/center-left policies, I'm sorry to say.

  • Genius show. Best on TV atm.

  • bold of him to forget to mention Disney

  • Also subprime auto loans has risen to a rate worse than during the financial crisis!

  • I work for a company that provides maintenance to Luxottica branded stores. The 1st time I saw the company name on a work order I thought it was a porn shop lol.

  • Can we agree that if a line is used by multiple politicians, it’s a lie?

  • THE BOND VILLAIN AND JOHN OLIVER HAD SAME GLASSES.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Loved this segment so much and was so intrigued by it I turned it into a research proposal and will be doing a research based masters thesis on it this September!
